The Land Before Time (1988) is a beloved animated classic from director Don Bluth (An American Tail). The film follows a young dinosaur named Littlefoot as he embarks on a perilous quest to find a new home, known as the Great Valley, after a devastating earthquake. During his journey, he meets other young dinosaurs in a heartwarming tale about love, friendship, and loss.
While the film spawned a multimedia franchise with 13 direct-to-video musical sequels, a television series, video games, soundtracks, and countless other forms of tie-in media, it has yet to be given the official reboot treatment, unlike many other classic animated films of that era.
There is, however, an independent, fan-made reimagining in the works from filmmaker Joey Lever. Over the past 18 months, Lever has teased a number of images and snippets of the character designs and has also confirmed the full voice cast for the film, which is titled Littlefoot, with young British actress Summer-Joules Saunders voicing the titular long-neck dinosaur.
Now, Lever has confirmed that Littlefoot will receive
Now, Lever has confirmed that Littlefoot will receive its first official teaser in November. The news was shared by CoveredGeekly in early October, which posted the following on social media. Lever subsequently reshared the post on his own accounts:
The official trailer for Littlefoot, an emotional reimagining of the original 1988 classic The Land Before Time, is expected to arrive online next month.
The upcoming animated short, which runs for approximately 15 minutes, has been created entirely by fans of the original film. However, the project has gone viral and attracted considerably more attention than its creators initially expected.
Animated entirely from scratch by Joey Lever and his independent team of artists at Imoria Pictures, the project has been made without the use of AI. Several high-profile voice actors are also attached, including Cristina Vee and Sarah Natochenny.
The short itself is expected to be released in 2027.
A video titled “Meet the Cast” was shared by Lever earlier this year, which includes stills from the production:
Imoria Pictures describes the project as follows:
“Littlefoot is a 15-minute 3D animated short from Imoria Pictures. A deeply emotional re-imagining of a timeless story about love, loss, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and child. At its heart, the film explores grief not as an ending, but as a transformation. It is about how love reshapes us, guides us, and stays with us long after someone is gone.
Through Littlefoot’s journey, the story reflects a universal truth: family is not only who we are born to, but who we find along the way. In a world that can feel uncertain and overwhelming, the film is a reminder that connection, memory, and love never truly disappear. They evolve. They echo. They carry us forward.”
There’s no release date for Littlefoot; however, the upcoming trailer may confirm this.
