Netflix releases trailer for José Mourinho documentary ahead of August premiere
The three-part series follows Mourinho’s remarkable career and features interviews with some of football’s biggest names
Netflix has officially released the trailer for Mourinho, a new three-part documentary series chronicling the career of Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho. Produced by the same team behind the acclaimed David Beckham documentary, the series will premiere worldwide on August 11.
The project has been filmed over the last two years and is produced by two-time Academy Award winner John Battsek, with BAFTA and Emmy-nominated director Joe Pearlman (Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now) leading the production.
The documentary is built around a significant milestone in Mourinho’s career: two decades since he stunned European football by guiding FC Porto to UEFA Champions League glory in 2004. From there, the series follows his journey through some of the biggest clubs in world football, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, and Fenerbahçe.
The trailer opens with Mourinho taking viewers through his personal trophy room, showcasing memorabilia collected throughout his career. Among the items featured are a replica Premier League trophy, football boots signed by Diego Maradona, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s first professional shirt.
In typical Mourinho fashion, the Portuguese manager also delivers one of his trademark quotes in the teaser.
“I started winning in 2003, and my last title was 2022. So it was 20 years winning. That’s why you want to tell my story. You don’t do a documentary with a guy that wins nothing.”
The documentary also features interviews with an extensive list of football figures who worked alongside—or competed against—Mourinho during his career. Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is among those appearing, along with Chelsea legends John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and Petr Čech.
Several former Real Madrid players also contribute, including Iker Casillas and Marcelo, while Zlatan Ibrahimović, Samuel Eto’o, Javier Zanetti, and Luís Figo are also interviewed.
According to Netflix, the series revisits many defining moments of Mourinho’s career, including Porto’s Champions League triumph, Inter’s historic treble-winning campaign, his fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola, and his departures from Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma.
The documentary also promises a more reflective side of Mourinho, as the veteran coach discusses the evolution of modern football and how he views his own legacy within the game.
