Story: Two bumbling best friends accidentally uncover and become a part of a terrorist plot. The nation’s safety rests in their hands. But can a no-gooder back from rehab and a geek be trusted with such a responsibility?Review: Remember Dodo (Divyenndu), Pinku (Pratik Gandhi), and Ayush (Avinash Tiwari) bumping into a hippie dude in Madgaon Express? The happy-high guy now has his own story. Meet Hardik Sharma (Kunal Kemmu), who moves to Mumbai after a stint at a rehab centre in London. His childhood friend, Bhagirathi ‘Bugs’ Bhargav (Sparsh Shrivastava), is determined to help Hardik turn his life around and gets him a job in the marketing department at his company.Things do take a turn when Hardik falls for their colleague, Kareena (Vanshika Dhir). But there’s more to her than meets the eye, and the best friends soon find themselves caught in a rigmarole that turns them into reluctant spies for an intelligence agency led by Madam H (Preity G Zinta), tasked with busting a terrorist plot.Here’s the catch — they are the bahumulya gadhe (invaluable asses) trusted with safeguarding the nation.Kemmu returns to direction with a comedy that also has him writing and top-lining the film, and he is in good form in all three departments. As Hardik, he rarely misses a beat with his comic timing. He is the entitled brat happily mooching off Bugs one moment, yet stupidly brave enough to try riding a motorbike into an aeroplane to save his friend. Thankfully, this isn’t a one-man show. Sparsh Shrivastava’s more responsible and earnest Bugs is endearing and goofy in equal measure, and his chemistry with Kemmu gives the film some of its funniest moments. Yashpal Sharma and Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’, as intelligence officers, infuse their parts with just the right amount of comedy. Vanshika Dhir makes an impressive debut, while Preity G Zinta plays Madam H with aplomb. That said, her body double during some of the action sequences is painfully apparent and doesn’t quite match the actress’s physique.Vibe is one of those films where the screenplay and sheer entertainment quotient elevate a fairly basic premise. The banter and comic set pieces are top-notch in the first half. The tonality shifts after the interval as the action takes over. The narrative becomes more convoluted and loses momentum in places as it packs in the terrorist plot, spy antics and increasingly outlandish twists. There are familiar tropes, too, including the Sipahi 1 pill that transforms Hardik into a fierce soldier and a surprise entry that saves the day during the climactic fight. Yet, despite these contrivances, the movie remains breezy and engaging enough to keep you invested. Hardik and Bugs’s training to become spies, in particular, makes for a hilarious track. Amit Trivedi’s edgy, contemporary music fits the film’s quirky world, while John Stewart Eduri’s slick, energetic background score adds considerably to the action and comedy.If you’re looking for a laugh riot driven by good performances and unabashed silliness, this one will match your vibe. The comedy begins even before the opening credits roll, as two voices discuss the special thanks and the seemingly endless list of partners, and keeps popping up right until the end.
