Despite the Dhurandhar franchise emerging as a massive global success, with its first two instalments collectively grossing more than ₹3,100 crore worldwide, its latest overseas outing has gotten off to a slow start.
Released in Japanese cinemas on July 10, the Ranveer Singh-led action entertainer has reportedly opened to a disappointing response at the country’s box office, falling short of expectations during its initial run.
Dhurandhar’s Japan Release
Released across nearly 80 screens in Japan on July 10, the big-budget action drama has struggled to attract audiences during its opening weekend. According to trade reports, the Ranveer Singh-starrer failed to secure a place among Japan’s top 25 highest-grossing films on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, signalling a weak start at the country’s box office.
The film reportedly registered 449 admissions by 2 pm on its opening day across 57 locations. While evening and night shows were expected to boost footfalls, the numbers remained underwhelming, with total admissions rising to only around 900 by the end of the day despite expanding to 80 locations. The lukewarm response comes as a surprise, considering the makers had mounted an extensive promotional campaign ahead of the film’s Japanese release.
Bollywood Box Office wrote on X, “Dhurandharrecords a DISAPPOINTING opening weekend in Japan. The film FAILED to enter the MIMORIN Top 25 chart on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The weekend trend itself speaks volumes about the film’s reception. Since it did not feature in the Top 25 on a single day of its opening weekend, its opening weekend admits remain unavailable. A hugely underwhelming debut at the Japanese box office. For a film of this scale, the opening weekend performance is nothing short of shocking.”

Biggest Indian Movies In Japan
The underwhelming response over its opening weekend has also cost Dhurandhar a place among the top 10 Indian films with the biggest opening-day footfalls in Japan. To break into the list, the Ranveer Singh-starrer needed to surpass 1,300 admissions, the benchmark currently held by Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, which ranks 10th. However, the film fell well short of that mark. Notably, Pushpa 2 also failed to make the top 10 during its Japanese release.
Currently, RRR remains the highest-opening Indian film in Japan with 8,230 admissions on its first day. It is followed by Saaho (6,510), Kalki 2898 AD (3,700), Pathaan (2,220), Salaar (2,200), Jawan (1,960), Rangasthalam (1,610), Devara (1,550), Baahubali 2 (1,380), andTiger 3 (1,300).
Dhurandhar’s Global Collection
The Japanese box office setback does little to diminish the franchise’s overall success on the global stage. The first Dhurandhar, released in December 2025, emerged as a blockbuster, grossing more than ₹1,307 crore worldwide during its theatrical run. Its sequel went on to build on that momentum, taking the franchise’s cumulative global box office earnings to over ₹3,100 crore, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian film franchises in recent years.
