Actor-writer Adivi Sesh has recently opened up about the Indian film industry, which still has a long way to go before it can truly claim to be “pan-India.”
Adivi Sesh’s most recent film, Dacoit, was simultaneously filmed in Telugu and Hindi before being dubbed into other languages for viewers throughout the nation.
The actor believes that the ongoing classification of films according to language is an unseen barrier that Indian cinema has yet to go past.
Through productions like Major and now Dacoit, which both found tremendous resonance outside of their home language areas, the actor has gradually developed a devoted following across linguistic markets over the years.
Adivi shared that the emphasis should move from language labels to storytelling as discussions about pan-Indian filmmaking continue to dominate the industry.
Adivi Sesh talked about the pan-India filmmaking and shared, “I find it interesting that we still call films ‘Hindi films’, ‘Telugu films’, ‘Tamil films’, and then separately use the term ‘pan-India film.’ If a film can emotionally connect with audiences across the country, why should its identity be restricted by language in the first place? The moment we stop looking at stories through linguistic boundaries and start embracing them as Indian stories, that’s when pan-India cinema will truly exist.”
He further added, “Language should be a medium of expression, not a limitation. Audiences today are far more open than ever before. They are watching great stories regardless of where they come from. I think the industry needs to catch up with the audience mindset. As creators, our responsibility is to tell authentic stories and make them accessible to everyone. The dream should be to create films that belong to the entire country, not just one language market.”
The actor’s remarks coincide with the fact that films are becoming more widely available in numerous languages and reaching audiences outside of their home regions.
Adivi is now gearing up for G2. The Telugu spy-thriller G2, also known as Goodachari 2, also stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Emraan Hashmi in the key roles.
