Star Wars is undoubtedly the biggest science fiction franchise in history, with one specific show taking that and blending it with a more modern, unique sci-fi concept from Black Mirror. The best sci-fi franchises tend to be those that reinvent themselves as they go, with Star Wars exemplifying this just like any other. Although the current batch of Star Wars movies and TV shows still have the feel of George Lucas’ original trilogy, there is no denying how they also take the franchise in new directions.

That said, for the most part, Star Wars projects are rarely mistaken for anything else. Yes, some projects push the boundaries of what is possible in Star Wars, but the overall tone remains the grand, high sci-fi that Lucas began decades ago. That is, except for one project in the franchise that takes the cerebral, unique format of a modern sci-fi story like Black Mirror –Star Wars: Visions. Star Wars: Visions was first released in 2021 on Disney+ and was entirely unique for the franchise.

In a big twist on Star Wars’ usual animated efforts, Visions was created using various studios from around the globe, each with their own unique take on the franchise. This continued into Star Wars: Visions season 2 in 2023 and Star Wars: Visions season 3 in 2025. Every episode of the show is non-canon to the movies and major TV productions, allowing each studio to add in elements that have never been seen in Star Wars before, including new sci-fi elements that often, despite vastly different tones, feel a lot like Black Mirror.

Star Wars: Visions Blends The Franchise With Black Mirror’s Unique Concept

Black Mirror is one of the more original modern sci-fi shows, with each episode centering on new characters, a new story, and new concepts within the genre. As an anthology, Black Mirror is able to push the boundaries of sci-fi in ways that are different each time. Throughout its run, Black Mirror has been lauded for its originality and for being endlessly experimental with a multitude of sci-fi concepts. In many ways, though, admittedly, with a much more family-friendly vibe, Star Wars: Visionsdoes the same.

Every single episode of Visions, except for two that are intentionally linked, features different characters, planets, plot points, and tones. This renders Visions a true Star Wars anthology unlike anything else in the franchise, with some of these episodes even experimenting in ways no one ever thought Lucasfilm would. Some episodes like this include “Sith” and “BLACK”. The former focuses on a former Sith using the Force to paint her home, while the latter is a psychedelic trip through a stormtrooper’s life. Like Black Mirror, Star Wars: Visions explores new sci-fi in a Star Wars anthology.

Star Wars: Visions Has Become A True Hit For Lucasfilm

To prove the success Star Wars: Visions has had, it has become a mainstay for Lucasfilm. Aside from the three seasons spread over the last six years, its own spin-off has also been released. Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi was released on Disney+ in 2026, focusing on the two aforementioned episodes of Visions that were linked. The show takes place in an alternate version of Star Wars where the Sith rule the galaxy, as nine Jedi strike back and try to restore peace.

This indicates that, if Visions‘ episodes are revered enough, they can expand into their own section of Star Wars. Visions has consistently been well-reviewed and has had strong viewership on Disney+ with each release, likely meaning a fourth season will be announced in the near future, perhaps at Star WarsCelebration 2027. If it is, Lucasfilm will only further solidify Star Wars: Visions as a true hit for Lucasfilm, thanks to the way it takes the recognizable elements of the franchise in which it takes place and blends them with the unique sci-fi of Black Mirror.
