Freddie Prinze Jr. hated his acting debut on “Family Matters,” one of the best sitcoms of the ’90s – but it’s not because his character, “Tough Guy,” only played a small role in his episode. As it turned out, he didn’t enjoy acting in front of a live audience. The “She’s All That” actor made the admission during an interview with Movieline in 2000. “That was my first show,” he said of the series. “It was in front of a live audience, so I hated it. I don’t like instant gratification.”
When the interviewer mentioned actors who felt that live performances helped them learn their craft, Prinze disagreed. “I don’t believe so,” he continued, adding, “Acting is very simple. If you look at the dictionary it says: to do. You listen, answer, commit and make sure that your s*** is honest. That’s universal, whether you’re in theater, TV or film.”
Although “Family Matters” was known for delivering big laughs to the millions of viewers who tuned in each week, Prinze’s episode, titled “The Gun,” took on the more serious matter of gun violence. After having a gun pulled on her, Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams) considers buying her own to protect herself. Later in the episode, her family puts together a gun turn-in program, which is where Prinze’s “Tough Guy” fits into the picture. “Turning in a gun and you give me money? Concert tickets? So what do I get?” he asks, to which Laura replies: “You get your life.”
Not everyone hates studio audiences
Freddie Prinze Jr. may not have enjoyed acting in front of a live audience, but every actor is different. For example, Jaleel White (who played several characters on “Family Matters”) seems to hold a greater appreciation for live audiences. He discussed the topic when, in an August 2026 interview, he was asked if he thought the live sitcom format would ever make a resurgence. “I don’t know if sitcoms are going to make a comeback,” he told USA Today. “I definitely miss a good live studio audience.”
Prinze’s prior aversion to performing in front of a live audience doesn’t mean he steered away from the sitcom genre entirely. One especially popular project was a 2002 episode of “Friends,” in which he played Sandy, the overly sentimental male nanny who briefly looks after Ross and Rachel’s baby. Ahead of shooting, David Schwimmer offered Prinze some encouragement. “You’re going to love this, man,” he said (via EW). “It’s like a little two-act play and the crowd is so engaged, and so into it. You’ll have a ton of fun, don’t worry about a thing.” And, judging from the audience’s laughter in that episode, everything worked out!
