If, for some reason, you were hoping Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew would come out of the gate with an R rating for intense, graphic violence and excessive language, I’ve got bad news for you. It shouldn’t come as a big surprise, but the MPA has given Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew a PG rating for “thematic elements, fantasy action, some language, brief violence and smoking.“
The previous three live-action Narnia movies, which aren’t connected to Gerwig’s version, were each rated PG as well.
A Dream Come True
The first trailer for the film, set to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, was released earlier this month. The reaction was…a little divisive. Some loved the rock-opera look of the film, while others felt it didn’t fit C.S. Lewis’ story. Personally, I think it looks like fun, but I didn’t grow up with the Narnia novels.
For Gerwig, getting to helm the movie has been a dream come true, as she’s been a fan of the otherworldly universe since childhood.
“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” she said. “I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me…It transformed me.“
When Will Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Be Released on Netflix?
Sneak previews in IMAX will begin on February 10, with the global wide release two days later, and the film will drop on Netflix on April 2, 2027. It’s the first Netflix movie to get such a wide release.
In a statement, an IMAX rep said, “From the outset, we got involved with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew to support Greta Gerwig and see her vision realized to the fullest in IMAX. The film’s delay until 2027 creates an opportunity to give Narnia an expanded, wide release with a full theatrical window; we support Greta and Netflix in pursuing that opportunity and are pleased IMAX could help facilitate. We hope as many people in as many places as possible can experience what Greta is creating with this special film — particularly in its exclusive debut in IMAX, as it was meant to be seen.“
