Never After Darkfollows Airi (Hoshi), a wandering medium who spends her life guiding restless spirits out of the world of the living. Summoned to an isolated country house, she comes face to face with a grotesque apparition with powers that defy Airi’s experience. As she digs deeper into the house’s past, a secret comes to light — and Airi finds herself hunted by a far more unpredictable force. For the first time, her greatest adversary is not the supernatural, but the living.
Review
I’ve been waiting to see writer/director Dave Boyle’sNever After Darksince its film festival debut. Alas, my festival viewing dates and the film never matched up, but now that it is on its wide release, I finally had the opportunity to watch . . . and the wait was more than worth it.
Never After Darkis the type of fear-fare feature that I don’t want to spoil in any way, because going in cold works beautifully for this one. Plotwise, other than the official synopsis above, suffice it to say that Boyle masterfully blends supernatural J-horror elements with “real world” human horrors. He ratchets up the mystery and tension with verve.
Airi (Moeka Hoshi) is an expert on how ghosts behave. She is so confident of her belief system and professional approach to sending ghosts away from homes that skepticism doesn’t faze her in the least. The ghost of her deceased sister Miku (Kurumi Inagaki) appears in mirrors to offer advice and help, but Airi sometimes acts annoyed at her presence. When Airi confronts a malevolent spirit that goes against the rules Airi knows so well, matters take a new, deadly turn as she is suddenly thrust from her knowledge zone into a wholly unfamiliar element.

That unfamiliar element is one of the factors that makeNever After Darksuch an original take on J-horror involving ghosts. The atmosphere on display is astounding. From the hypnotic wheel that Airi employs (you’ll see) to the eldritch ambience of the haunted house and its surroundings, the eeriness is palpable.
Hoshi is superb as the medium whose confidence is shattered when the occult rules are changed by way of two evil presences new to her. She heads up a terrific cast. Cinematographer Patrick Ouziel captures the creepy proceedings wonderfully, while Composer Jonathan Snipes adds the perfect musical accompaniment.
Never After Darkgets my highest recommendations, and should be of interest to fright-fare aficionados of all stripes. It’s an absolute top 10 of 2026 selection for yours truly.
