A legend who hardly requires introduction, Clint Eastwood has spent his decades-spanning career with utmost dedication to the craft. After gaining recognition for his work as Rowdy Yates on CBS’ “Rawhide,” Eastwood went on to star in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy,” which cemented the global acclaim of his character, the Man with No Name. Eastwood made many more contributions to Westerns, and he also played anti-hero cop Harry Callahan in the “Dirty Harry” film franchise throughout the 1970s and ’80s.

Eastwood has starred in an astounding number of films, but notable ones include “Hang ‘Em High,” “Pale Rider,” “Heartbreak Ridge,” “Escape from Alcatraz,” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” His directing credits include “Mystic River,” 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby,” “Gran Torino,” and “Juror #2,” among others.

Eastwood has won four Oscars, five Golden Globes, and three César Awards (along with an Honorary Award) for his impressive work, while also receiving the AFI Life Achievement Award. On the television front, he has made appearances in “Mister Ed,” “Maverick,” and the popular anthology series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.”

Eastwood brings depth and layered complexity to every character he embodies, which is why he is today’s Quote of the Day.

Quote of the Day by Clint Eastwood

“There’s a rebel lying deep in my soul. Anytime anybody tells me the trend is such and such, I go the opposite direction. I hate the idea of trends. I hate imitation; I have a reverence for individuality.”

The above quote is from Eastwood’s 1996 interview with The New York Times . Speaking about his love for individuality, Eastwood rejected the notion of blindly following trends for the sake of it

“You follow trends, you’ll always be one step behind,” Eastwood continued. “Do what you believe in. Sure, you’ll miss sometimes. But at least you’ll have taken a shot at it,” the actor concluded.

Deeper meaning of Clint Eastwood’s quote — forge your own identity

Eastwood’s quote about individuality can be contextualized by many of the artistic choices he made in his career.  Everyone from Josey Wales (“The Outlaw Josey Wales”) to Frank Morris (“Escape from Alcatraz”) has a rebellious streak — some are seasoned outlaws within the context of Western conventions, while others stand up to corruption by challenging the system from within.

Eastwood’s penchant for playing cynical anti-heroes is peppered all over his filmography, but even his most conventionally “good” characters contain shades of moral complexity.

One of his most famous roles, Harry Callahan, is about a lawman who rages against corruption and police bureaucracy and is ready to break every rule to apprehend criminals. Although Harry is still a cop who upholds justice within a legal framework, he adopts a world-weary, lonesome persona that feels more suited to a jaded vigilante than a police detective.

    More quotes from Clint Eastwood

    • “People love Westerns worldwide. There’s something fantasylike about an individual fighting the elements. Or even bad guys and the elements. It’s a simpler time. There’s no organized laws and stuff.” — from a 2008 interview with Esquire
    • “I just do what I feel I should be doing. Whether you’re nominated for something or not has never been a motivating force for me. It’s just playing the roles. Once you finish a film, it doesn’t belong to you anymore — it belongs to the audience to interpret it the way they feel like interpreting.” — from a 2005 interview with Bright Lights Film Journal
    • “I have the advantage of a lot of years of experience, and if I can’t put it together, then I should not be doing it. You have to feel confident. If you don’t, then you’re going to be hesitant and defensive, and there’ll be a lot of things working against you. In my career as a director, there’s always been some point where you get halfway through it, or three-quarters, and you go: ‘What is this thing all about, and why am I telling the story? Does anybody really care about seeing this?’ At that time you have to say: ‘Okay, forget that and just go ahead.'” — from a 2007 interview with The Guardian
