It’s been nearly 15 years since The Adventures of Tintin burst into theaters, reintroducing audiences to Hergé‘s timeless globetrotting reporter and his trusty, fearless Wire Fox Terrier, Snowy. Released in 2011, the animated epic marked a hotly anticipated collaboration between some of Hollywood’s most influential and visionary filmmakers, blending cutting-edge motion-capture technology with classic blockbuster spectacle. Steven Spielberg stepped behind the camera to direct, while Peter Jackson took on producing duties—with plans famously swapped for a prospective sequel—and sharp minds like Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish contributing to the larger-than-life adventure.
A High-Flying Collaboration Kept on Ice
Ever since the credits rolled on the first film, fans of practical-minded cinematic thrills and grand-scale storytelling have been clamoring for another voyage. Earlier this year, Jackson offered a glimmer of hope when he confirmed to Gold Derby that a Tintin sequel was “in the works,” but let’s be honest: after more than a decade of false starts and radio silence, many of us had our doubts. For what feels like an absolute eternity, The Adventures of Tintin 2 has felt far more like a pipe dream, the kind of elusive white whale whispered about in online forums, than something actually destined to happen.
Jackson Breaks the Silence
However, while recently speaking with Screen Rant about his various Middle-earth endeavors, Jackson dropped an update that ought to turn even the most stubborn non-believers around.
“We have The Shadow of the Past, which is in the scriptwriting stage. The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. I think there are about two weeks of shooting left,” Jackson shared. “And we’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make.”
Am I catching a whiff of significant progress in the salty sea air? Someone hand me a bottle of Loch Lomond and call Captain Haddock, because it sounds like we’re finally about to set sail!
Setting Sail for the Next Chapter
With a completed script officially locked in and Jackson signaling that it’s next on his docket, the tangible steps toward making this long-awaited sequel a reality can finally begin in earnest. It’s nothing short of a cinematic miracle, and frankly, I couldn’t be more ready to dust off my trench coat and board the Unicorn once again.
