Debra Messing, who says she’s been a Democrat her whole life, has announced she is voting for a Republican for Governor of New York.

In a statement posted to her Instagram, she explained why.

She shared that affordability and safety are two issues that she cares about in this upcoming election.

She said, “Four years ago, I voted for Governor Hochul. When I asked myself honestly whether I believe New York is better off today, my answer was no. So I asked myself the question I’d encourage everyone to ask. Not: ‘Which party am I supposed to vote for?’ But: ‘Who do I believe will actually make life better for the people I love and the place l live?’ For me, that’s Bruce Blakeman.”

Bruce Blakeman has been endorsed by Trump.

You may have seen that l’m supporting Bruce Blakeman for Governor of New York.

I’ve always been open with you about my politics, and I want keep it that way.

I’m not sharing this to defend my stance. I’m sharing it because I think talking honestly about how we make these decisions matters.

I have been a Democrat my whole life. For years, my focus has been protecting choice and voting rights, passing the ERA, protecting the rights of the gay community, and keeping our children’s schools safe from gun violence. I still stand by every one of those principles.

    That hasn’t changed.

What has changed is how I feel about the city and state I love dearly.

I am a proud New Yorker, and also a privileged one. I’ve been educated here, employed here, and built a life I’m incredibly grateful for here.

I know I’m not someone choosing between rent and groceries. But many of the people who make New York what it is: small business owners, teachers, nurses, and young people trying to start their lives here, are struggling with the rising cost of living, and policies like congestion pricing are making it increasingly difficult to afford.

New York has always been defined by its people. When the people who keep it running can’t afford to live here, we risk losing part of what has long made New York an extraordinary place of opportunity.

I have also become increasingly concerned about public safety. The violence we see on our streets and subways frightens me. Houses of worship are no longer places where everyone can simply assume they will be safe. My own was violated by violence in the middle of a Shabbat service, and the level of security we now need simply to pray does not feel normal to me.

Four years ago, I voted for Governor Hochul. When I asked myself honestly whether I believe New York is better off today, my answer was no.

So I asked myself the question I’d encourage everyone to ask.

Not: “Which party am I supposed to vote for?”

But: “Who do I believe will actually make life better for the people I love and the place l live?”

For me, that’s Bruce Blakeman. His focus is on affordability and making New York safer for everyone. And, vital to me, his campaign says he is pro-choice and supports gay rights.

I don’t agree with him on everything, and I don’t expect to. No candidate is perfect. But on the issues that are hurting New Yorkers most right now, I believe he’s the right choice. Yes, he’s been endorsed by the President. That’s not what my vote is about.

My vote is about New York.

I no longer believe that party affiliation should determine every vote I cast.

I’m making this decision based on my own conscience and priorities.

You may land somewhere completely different, and that’s okay. That’s the point.

I’m not asking anyone to vote the way I do. I’m asking you to do what I tried to do: look honestly at where things stand, decide what matters most to you, and vote for that, not for a label.

Voting is an inalienable right, and it is precious. Participating is our obligation. Make sure your voice is counted. Please vote
