Apple Watch Series 12 still needs an iPhone to get started, but Apple’s own descriptions of watchOS 27 add two features this year that work without one nearby: Workout Buddy over Wi-Fi or cellular, and setup of a child’s watch through Apple Watch For Your Kids. Apple Watch Series 12 reaches stores Friday, September 18, running watchOS 27 out of the box.
The question of what an Apple Watch can do on its own, and what it cannot, comes up every year, and Apple’s answer changes a little with each software release. Here is what Apple has actually published for Series 12 and watchOS 27, separated from what is simply carried-over behavior from previous watches.
The key facts
What changed in watchOS 27
Apple’s watchOS 27 material names Workout Buddy as working without a nearby iPhone for the first time, over Wi-Fi or cellular, a change from previous versions where the feature needed the phone in range. Apple also describes a new setup path for children’s watches, Apple Watch For Your Kids, that does not require an iPhone during setup, alongside new child account protections. Both are watchOS 27 changes, not features exclusive to Series 12’s hardware, so Apple’s compatibility list suggests they extend to every watch that runs watchOS 27.

What still needs an iPhone
Every Apple Watch, including Series 12, is paired to a specific iPhone the first time it is set up, and Apple’s watchOS 27 requirement names iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 27, as the phone that setup depends on. Apple’s press release describes the watch’s Audio Intelligence features, Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Shazam-style music detection, as running on the watch itself, which is a different question from whether the watch was paired to an iPhone at some point.
Apple sells Series 12 in a GPS model and a GPS-plus-Cellular model, and only the cellular version has its own connection to place calls, send messages or use Apple Pay when no iPhone is anywhere nearby. Apple’s tech specs page lists the cellular models under separate model numbers with their own 5G and LTE band support, which is the mechanism that lets a cellular Apple Watch act on its own rather than relying on a paired iPhone’s connection.
Where Series 12 differs from Ultra 4
Apple Watch Ultra 4 continues Apple’s satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My, a feature Apple’s own comparison material does not list for Series 12. That means a Series 12 owner without a paired iPhone in range, and without a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, has fewer standalone options in an emergency than an Ultra 4 owner does, regardless of which watch has a cellular model.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a complete list of every Series 12 feature and whether each one needs an iPhone nearby, a Wi-Fi connection, or neither. It has not stated a maximum range for the Bluetooth connection between watch and iPhone, nor whether Siri AI on the watch needs the paired iPhone actively nearby for every request or only for setup and occasional syncing. Those gaps mean a firm answer for any feature not named above is simply not available from Apple yet.
Apple Watch Series 12 is available to pre-order now and reaches stores Friday, September 18, alongside watchOS 27, which arrives free on Monday, September 14.
