A24’s Biggest Movie
The studio, which is usually pretty niche (with a few mainstream-friendly releases), is joining the big boys soon with their first three-digit, multimillion-dollar-budgeted tentpole franchise film. Deadline is reporting that the live-action adaptation of Elden Ring from A24 has a price tag that ranges from $175 million to $200 million, which unquestionably makes it the studio’s biggest movie. It is also the biggest movie to ever go on sale at the American Film Market.
According to Deadline, the film is rightfully attracting a lot of interest and Amazon MGM is taking a bunch of international pay-1 streaming rights off the table in a big deal as the film attracts buyers. The deal is also said that it could also potentially lead to interesting activations on Amazon’s Twitch platform.
For such a big movie, A24 went to their resident big-movie director, Alex Garland, who is known for making films with more depth than the usual blockbuster. Garland wrote and directed the film, which is currently in post-production.
Cast, Release date and IMAX
A24 will be partnering up with Bandai Namco Entertainment for this film and more interesting news is that it is the first A24 movie filmed for IMAX. Kit Connor stars in the film, with a cast that will include Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz.
A24 has also secured a release date of March 3, 2028.
The Video Game
Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG where you play as a Tarnished warrior seeking to restore the shattered Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord by defeating mighty demigods in a dark, mysterious fantasy world. George R. R. Martin, creator of the fantasy-novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, provided worldbuilding for the game.
Peter Rice will produce the Elden Ring movie alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis. Garland and A24 had also previously worked together on Ex Machina, Men, Civil War and Warfare, so it makes sense that he would be the filmmaker they’re entrusting with the Elden Ring adaptation. Not too long ago, Garland said that he was “going to take a break from directing for the foreseeable future,” but the director continues to chug away at projects.
