Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Dark Matter season 2, episode 10, “No Quiet Life.”Dark Matter will never be the same after the game-changing season 2 finale.
After Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi) decides that he wants to shut the Pyramid down, he is killed by another version of himself, Oluko, who then flees to another reality without the use of the chemical compound. This is followed by a major cliffhanger of Daniela Dessen (Jennifer Connelly) and Charlie (Oakes Fegley) getting stranded in a mysterious location after Jason (Joel Edgerton) shuts down the Box, not realizing until too late that he has prevented his family from getting home.
In an interview with Collider, series creator Blake Crouch shared that he and the creative team always knew season 2 would build to these two moments: “A lot of the episodes took a long time to really come into focus, but we always had a very strong sense of what the finale was going to be. We knew that Leighton was going to get killed by Olu — we also call him Guru Leighton. We knew that Leighton was going to get killed; we knew that Charlie and Daniela would be stranded, and those were our north stars for the second season.”
When asked about how Oluko is able
When asked about how Oluko is able to travel the multiverse without the chemical compound, Crouch explained how “what’s intended is the idea that this is a guy who has kind of mastered meditation, control of thoughts, and for that moment, he transcended the need for the drug that makes the corridor visible. He actually put himself within the corridor in a super-positional state, which has never happened in the show before.”He also confirmed that viewers should be“very worried”about Oluko moving forward.
As for the fates of Daniela and Charlie, Crouch does not reveal where they ended up after the Box went offline, but does break down how it’s a consequence of Jason prioritizing his scientific obsession over his own family, with putting his work on top of Daniela’s note being a metaphor for this. Check out Crouch’s comments below:
He misses seeing Daniela’s note telling him that she went into the Box after Charlie. In fact, he puts a piece of his research and his work on top, like he throws it down on top of her note. I honestly just realized this recently when someone mentioned it on a Reddit thing that it’s a nice metaphor for what he’s done the whole season, which is to put his work above the family.
Yes, he is trying to disentangle the box and then shut it down to protect his family. But he’s also become so obsessed with it. At this point, I think, he’s being led more by obsession, or as much by obsession as the love of his family. And, I think at the end, I think he’s starting to come to terms with, and Amanda embraces him, [the fact that] my family is f***ing stranded in another world. I stranded them and I didn’t only strand them. It is my obsession that led to this.
While speaking with Reactor, Crouch did confirm that Daniela and Charlie aren’t back in the world they just left where Max is still alive. In terms of when this cliffhanger will be followed up on, season 3 has not been renewed by Apple TV yet, but the showrunner teased that “we do have a very strong, mind-blowing idea for what the last season would be, if we’re fortunate enough to get to make it.”
Daniela and Charlie being stranded, Jason attempting
Daniela and Charlie being stranded, Jason attempting to get them back without the Box, and Oluko serving as a dangerous antagonist is a compelling starting point for the potential third season. The Pyramid helped Oluko escape, and Leighton and Jason2 wanted to end it, but it may now be the only way that Jason can access the multiverse and reach his family, given what happened to the Box.
Jason is also fortunate enough to be in a world with Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga), Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson), and Blair (Amanda Brugel), all of whom will undoubtedly help him figure out how to reach Daniela and Charlie. Jason2 helping and being instrumental in saving the wife and child he couldn’t have would also be a fitting way to continue and complete his redemption arc, especially with Dark Matter season 3 being the planned ending of the show.
Along with being the series creator and showrunner, Crouch is the author of the 2016 Dark Matter novel that the Apple TV show is based on. After season 1 adapted thehat happens next to Jason, Daniela, Charlie, Jason2, Leighton, Amanda, Ryan, Blair, and other variants of them. This included episodes 5 and 8, which are more standalone and focus on versions of Jason other than the two main ones that the show follows
