Director Rahul Sankrityan attempts to revisit a lesser-explored chapter of Indian history by blending historical drama with commercial cinema in Ranabaali. At its core, the film is set against the backdrop of the Great Famine of 1876–78, following Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a man destined to challenge both the devastating famine and the oppressive British regime that worsened its impact.Vijay Deverakonda delivers a compelling performance as the fiery protagonist, convincingly portraying a man driven by rage and purpose.Rashmika Mandanna, as Jayamma, brings restraint and warmth to the narrative. Their romance lends emotional weight to the story without overshadowing its larger political backdrop.Visually, the film is mounted on a grand scale, with the production design effectively recreating the period. Rahul Sankrityan succeeds in presenting history through an accessible commercial lens while shedding light on a tragedy that remains largely absent from mainstream cinema. The inclusion of archival photographs from the famine adds authenticity and leaves a lasting impact. The first half maintains a steady balance of romance, action, and drama, making for an engaging watch. While the second half occasionally slows under the weight of its narrative, it gradually regains momentum as the emotional and historical stakes deepen. The violence is intense and, at times, excessive, but it reinforces the brutality of the era and the motivations behind Ranabaali’s rebellion. Despite a few pacing issues, the film succeeds in bringing an overlooked historical event to the screen by blending historical depth with the elements of commercial cinema.
