63 Years Ago: CBS Aired The First Regular 30-Minute Evening News - A Look Back At CBS News

Sixty-three years after a quiet but decisive change in American television, the modern half-hour evening newscast still follows a template first set on Labor Day weekend in 1963. On September 2 of that year, CBS doubled the length of its national weeknight news program, moved it to 6:30 p.m. Eastern time, and retitled the broadcast the CBS Evening News. Anchored by Walter Cronkite from the network newsroom in New York, it became the first daily half-hour news program on a U.S. television network.

Until that night, the three major networks had treated evening news as a brief bulletin. Fifteen minutes was the industry standard, a format that left little room for context, field reports, or interviews that ran more than a few sentences. CBS had aired a national evening news program since 1948, first under Douglas Edwards and then, beginning in April 1962, under Cronkite. The expansion was a bet that viewers would stay for more than headlines and that affiliates would surrender extra commercial time in the early evening. NBC followed with its own half-hour newscast a week later. ABC did not match the format until 1967.

The extra time changed what a network newscast could be. Correspondents who had rarely been seen on air now had space to report from the field. The debut program mixed breaking domestic conflict with a pre-recorded conversation Cronkite had conducted with President John F. Kennedy at the summer White House in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Kennedy discussed civil rights, unemployment, the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and Vietnam, and the political cost of those issues heading toward the 1964 election. Elsewhere in the same broadcast, the program reported on Governor George Wallace surrounding an Alabama public school with state troops to delay court-ordered integration, and on police and mounted troopers using tear gas and water hoses against civil rights demonstrators in Plaquemine, Louisiana.

Eighty-one days later, the same expanded broadcast would

Eighty-one days later, the same expanded broadcast would lead with the assassination of the president who had sat for that interview. The half-hour format proved large enough to carry national trauma, then the war in Vietnam, then the long run of Cronkite as the most trusted figure in American journalism. He remained in the chair until 1981.

The change was not only about minutes. It was about authority. A 15-minute newscast summarized the day. A 30-minute newscast could explain it, introduce reporters by name, and still close with the date and a sign-off that became a national ritual. In an era of 24-hour cable, streaming alerts, and social media fragments, a half hour can feel modest. In 1963 it was a revolution in how millions of Americans learned what had happened that day.

The program that began that September evening is still on the air, now well into its eighth decade and still occupying the same early-evening slot for most of the country. The faces, graphics, and delivery have changed. The length has not. What began as an experiment in giving the news more room became the default shape of American network television news, and it started 63 years ago this week when CBS decided that 15 minutes was no longer enough.
