The mass-market era of the DVD has effectively ended in the United States, as physical media sales have collapsed over the past decade and remaining buyers have shifted toward higher-quality Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD formats.

Between 2015 and 2025, U.S. sales of physical discs fell from $6.1 billion to approximately $870 million, an 85.7 percent decline. Physical media now represents less than 2 percent of total domestic home entertainment spending. Over the same period, subscription streaming revenue surged from roughly $5.1 billion to more than $57.5 billion. The shift has altered studio distribution strategies, with many mid-tier films, television series, and streaming-exclusive titles bypassing physical disc releases altogether.

Retail support has contracted sharply alongside the sales drop. Best Buy discontinued in-store and online sales of DVDs and Blu-rays in early 2024, while Target has substantially reduced its physical media sections, limiting availability largely to new releases or seasonal periods. The end of Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service in 2023 removed another long-standing access point. With fewer retail shelves to stock, major studios have had diminished incentive to produce standard-definition DVDs at previous volumes.

Physical media has not disappeared entirely but has

Physical media has not disappeared entirely but has narrowed into a collector-oriented niche. While standard DVD releases have dwindled, premium formats have shown relative resilience. Sales of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs rose by about 12 percent in recent years, driven by home theater enthusiasts seeking uncompressed audio, higher video quality, and permanent ownership that streaming compression and licensing changes cannot reliably provide. Boutique labels including the Criterion Collection, Shout! Factory, Arrow Video, and Vinegar Syndrome have assumed a larger role, acquiring rights to older and niche titles and issuing remastered editions with extensive special features and premium packaging.

The rate of decline in overall physical sales has begun to moderate after years of steeper drops. Rising subscription costs, the sudden removal of titles from streaming libraries, and the occasional substitution of edited versions for original cuts have contributed to what observers describe as streaming fatigue. This has coincided with renewed interest among some younger collectors, including members of Generation Z, who prioritize ownership that remains independent of any single platform’s catalog decisions. Movies continue to appear on disc, but primarily in Blu-ray and 4K UHD editions aimed at a smaller, quality-focused audience rather than the broad consumer base that once sustained the DVD boom of the 2000s.
