Unveiled during the recent Top Hat Studios 2026 Fall Showcase, The Backworld developed by Nomur Games now has a Q2 2027 release window after being delayed out of 2026 earlier in the year. Taking inspirations from Earthbound in its character design and turn-based RPG combat while blending it with survival horror decision-making and atmosphere.
Just from this new release window trailer, you can see the liminal space and Backrooms in the world design with the constant appearances of long hallways or just large open areas with random horrors at every turn. Then there’s the resource management and absolute fright inducing low light that opens up to reveal the game’s bevy of monsters. Speaking of these monsters, as someone that’s a huge fan of horror, the influences in the monster art are vast with a few resembling some definite icons, while others are disturbingly alien or animal-like. But they are not just there to creep out the party as they walk around, they also pack a punch in battle as well.
Turn-Based combat is the main way to deal with baddies in The Backworld, but it doesn’t mean you should rush into a fight head-on at every opportunity. According to lead developer Nathan Jennings via an interview conducted with RPGamer, the game features optional sanity and hunger modes, which can cause party members to go insane or strike out on their own due to lack of sustenance. Not to mention, there’s a big chance they may be too powerful for the party, forcing you to make the survival horror decision of run away and get chased, or try to get around it for the experience. This is aside from boss battles, which promise specific phases, where they may be no fighting in them at all.
These elements are all tied together by the story which contains both a main narrative and also plenty of branching explorable paths, hidden doorways to find, and secret endings. For anyone interested there is also a playable demo available on PCease date some time in the future
