Fox News Channel today marks its 30th anniversary on October 7, 2026, three decades after the cable network first went on the air as a challenger to the established 24-hour news outlets of the mid-1990s. The channel was created by media executive Rupert Murdoch, who hired former political strategist and television executive Roger Ailes as its founding chief executive. Murdoch had announced plans for the service earlier in 1996, drawing on experience from the Sky News operation in Britain and from the growth of the Fox broadcast network in entertainment and sports. At the time, CNN dominated cable news and MSNBC had only recently launched, and many industry observers doubted that another all-news channel could find a lasting audience or secure enough distribution to survive.
The network began broadcasting on October 7, 1996, initially available in roughly 10 million to 17 million homes depending on the carriage agreements then in place. Murdoch reversed the usual economics of cable distribution by paying some system operators to carry the channel rather than charging them a fee, a costly bet intended to build reach quickly. Early programming featured anchors such as Neil Cavuto and Tony Snow, and the network promoted itself as an alternative to what its founders described as a liberal tilt in much of the existing news media. Its slogans emphasized fairness and balance along with the idea that viewers should weigh the reporting for themselves. Construction of the original New York facilities was still unfinished in the weeks before launch, and the first on-air staff worked from temporary setups while the operation took shape.
Audience growth accelerated in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Coverage of the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the disputed 2000 presidential election helped distinguish the channel’s tone and pacing from its rivals. By 2002 Fox News had overtaken CNN in the ratings, and it has remained the most-watched cable news network for the large majority of the quarters since then, often leading all of basic cable in total viewers during major news periods. Signature programs built around opinion and panel discussion, including long-running evening shows and daytime roundtables, became central to its schedule and helped lock in a loyal audience that competitors struggled to peel away.
The path was not uninterrupted
The path was not uninterrupted. Ailes left the network in 2016 amid sexual-harassment allegations. Prime-time host Bill O’Reilly departed the following year after advertiser pressure tied to similar claims. In 2023, the company agreed to a $787.5 million settlement of a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems over coverage of the 2020 election, and host Tucker Carlson exited the same year. Leadership and lineup adjustments followed each episode, yet the channel continued to lead cable-news ratings. Ownership now sits with Fox Corporation, chaired by Lachlan Murdoch, after the earlier separation of much of the broader Murdoch entertainment assets.
Over three decades, the network expanded from a lightly distributed startup into a multiplatform operation that includes the subscription service Fox Nation, launched in 2018, and later streaming offerings. It has covered wars, elections, economic crises, and cultural disputes while remaining a focal point of debate about media bias and political influence. Thirty years after a launch that many predicted would fail within months, Fox News remains the highest-rated channel in cable news and one of the most consequential forces in American television.
