Google has started rolling out a major firmware update for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a that adds sleep-aware behavior, simpler call controls, one-tap translation, and expanded voice commands, with one noise-cancellation improvement reserved for the higher-end model. The changes, first previewed in August, are arriving now and are intended to tighten the earbuds’ connection to other Pixel hardware rather than introduce entirely new hardware capabilities.
The most distinctive addition is sleep detection that depends on a paired Pixel Watch. Once the watch registers that the wearer has fallen asleep, the buds pause whatever audio is playing, silence notifications, and switch off touch controls. The response is meant to stop music or podcasts from continuing overnight and to reduce accidental taps while the user is resting. Both the Pro 2 and the 2a receive this behavior, so owners of either pair can use it as long as a compatible Pixel Watch is also in use.
Call handling gains a tap-to-mute gesture. During a phone call, a quick tap on an earbud mutes or unmutes the microphone. The option works only when the buds are connected to a Pixel phone, limiting it to users already inside Google’s phone lineup. Live translation is likewise simplified: a single tap can start the feature through the Google Translate app without requiring the user to pull out the handset. Gemini voice commands now cover active noise cancellation, equalizer adjustments, and touch-control settings, letting owners change those options by speaking instead of opening the companion app.
Dynamic active noise cancellation is limited
Dynamic active noise cancellation is limited to the Pixel Buds Pro 2. The mode monitors how completely each bud seals against the ear and automatically adjusts both audio levels and noise-cancellation strength when the fit changes. The goal is more consistent isolation and sound even if an earbud shifts during walking, exercise, or ordinary head movement. The 2a does not receive this particular adjustment.
Google described the rollout in a post on its Pixel Buds community forum. An earlier version of that post indicated that every new feature except dynamic noise cancellation would also reach the original Pixel Buds Pro; those references were later removed. The company was contacted for comment on the revision. Related reports identify the firmware as release 6.144 and note that installation occurs automatically once the update reaches a given pair of buds.
Taken together, the additions emphasize ecosystem features over standalone audio improvements. Sleep detection only functions with a Pixel Watch, tap-to-mute only with a Pixel phone, and the most advanced noise-cancellation behavior stays on the newest Pro model. For owners who already use multiple Pixel devices, the update reduces the need to reach for a phone or watch during calls, translation, late-night listening, or routine setting changes. For owners of the first-generation Pixel Buds Pro, the removed forum language leaves open whether any of the same capabilities will arrive later. The rollout is underway, so supported buds should receive the firmware as it propagates over the coming days.
