Alan Ritchson’s box office troubles worsened this week as his latest action comedy lost roughly 2,200 theater locations just days before its digital release. It has brought forward the growing gap between the actor’s streaming dominance and his uneven theatrical track record.
Runner was just removed by roughly 2,200 theaters before digital debut
Runner was released in more than 2,500 theaters in September but now holds only 340 locations nationwide . The film shifts to PVOD on October 13, effectively ending its wide theatrical run
Angel Studios distributed Alan Ritchson’s actioner as part of a push beyond its faith-based audience, but the film never gained enough traction to hold screens. It has collected approximately $15 million domestically and $17.7 million worldwide
Those numbers land in the same territory
Those numbers land in the same territory as this year’s Jason Statham vehicles, Shelter and Mutiny. Director Scott Waugh built Runner around the chemistry between Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson.
The plot follows a former soldier and a medical courier racing to deliver a rare organ to a terminally ill girl while a cartel pursues them. Critics responded well: the film holds a 77% critics’ score and a Verified Hot 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Positive reviews, however, did not translate into staying power.
Moreover, Runner has become Ritchson’s second theatrical misfire of 2026. Motor City, a 1970s-set action film co-starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Foster, grossed roughly $3 million against a reported $30 million budget. That film later recovered some ground on PVOD.
Ritchson’s streaming performance tells a different story
However, Ritchson’s streaming performance tells a different story. He opened the year with War Machine, the most-watched Netflix original of 2026 and one of the platform’s most-watched originals ever. Reacher and its spin-off, Neagley, have both given strong results.
For Alan Ritchson, the pattern appears to be clear: streaming audiences show up, but theatrical crowds do not. Runner now tests whether PVOD can recover what theaters could not.
