Wild Tamil Nadu Review:One of the best decisions filmmaker Kalyan Varma makes with Wild Tamil Nadu is structuring it around the state’s five distinct landscapes — the Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal, and Paalai, classifications that date back to Sangam literature. This not only helps capture the sheer diversity of the land and its inhabitants while also adding historical context. Sorting its wildlife by region, the documentary moves fluidly across Tamil Nadu’s fauna — from towering elephants to tiny fireflies — illustrating how each species plays its part in maintaining ecological balance. We watch creatures at the very top of mountain ranges and those in the depths of the sea go about their lives, adapting to their environments, with survival emerging as a thread that runs across every landscape and species. Within this larger narrative, we get smaller, more intimate stories built around recurring characters — hornbills, lion-tailed macaques, baya weavers, flamingos. There’s even something recognisably human in their behaviour: jealousy, as when a baya weaver steals nesting material from its neighbour, or cooperation, as in the mutually beneficial alliance between the barred shrimp goby and the burrowing shrimp. Rather than hammering home its message about the fragility of our ecosystems and the urgency of preserving them, Wild Tamil Nadu lets that idea emerge organically through stories of resilience and hope. Arvind Swami’s voice-over adds warmth and a quiet dignity, while Ricky Kej’s score adds liveliness to the visuals.Should you watch it?Definitely. It’s a story of all of us, for all of us.
